Flehmen Response
The Flehmen response, sometimes referred to as the Flehmen position or Flehming, is a behavior exhibited by many animals, including cats, that involves curling back the lips and exposing the front teeth. This behavior allows the animal to investigate and analyze scents, particularly pheromones or chemical cues, more effectively. It plays a role in their communication, particularly in situations related to mating, territory, and social interactions. While it might look unusual to humans, it’s a fascinating aspect of animal behavior and biology.
